Prof. Sanjeewa Seneviratne graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo in 2003 with First Class Honours and Distinctions in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Parasitology, Pharmacology, Paediatrics, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Psychological Medicine winning 10 medals and awards including the University of Colombo Student of the Year award. He was placed first in order of merit among over 800 medical graduates from 6 medical faculties. He joined the Department of Surgery in 2011 as Lecturer in Surgery and completed his MD in the University of Colombo and FRCS(Edin) in 2019. In 2012, he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to read for a PhD in breast cancer at the University of Auckland, New Zealand which he successfully completed in 2016. Having completed postgraduate training overseas he was board certified as a specialist in Surgery and was promoted to Senior Lecturer. Since 2015, he has been an honorary Consultant Surgeon in the University Surgical Unit, National Hospital, Colombo.
Prof. Seneviratne has over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and numerous abstracts. He has received many awards for research including the Presidential Award for Scientific Publication and TOYP top ten young Sri Lankan award (Medical Research) in 2017. He is the recipient of several research grants both local and overseas.
Prof. Seneviratne holds many posts in the university including the Senior Treasurer, Medical Faculty Students’ Union and Member, Board of Management, Institute of Indigenous Medicine.
