Dr Joel Arudchelvam.  Currently works as a senior lecturer, at the department of surgery Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo.

He passed out from the faculty of  Medicine University of Colombo in 2004.  He obtained first class Honours in the final MBBS examination with distinction in Surgery, Medicine, Anatomy and Parasitology.  He also obtained Chalmers gold medal for Anatomy, the Dhunjishaw Dadabhoy Gold medal for Medicine, the Rockwood Gold medal for Surgery, Dr.M.N.Burhan Gold medal for Surgery. He also obtained the Flora and Wilson Bandaranayake memorial book token.

He obtained his post graduate qualifications i.e. MD (surgery) in 2010 with Dr.P.R.Anthonis Gold medal for MD (surgery) part one examination held in January 2007. He passed Member of  the  Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS (Eng.)) examination in 2011.

He is a consultant vascular and transplant surgeon.  He worked as a consultant at the teaching in hospital Anuradhapura from 2015 to 2020. The teaching hospital Anuradhapura was the only vascular and transplant unit in this part of the country. The hospital covered the needs of the north central, northern, eastern and half of the north western provinces of the country. Here all ranges of vascular surgeries, dialysis related surgeries and transplantations were offered (including kidney, pancreas and liver transplantations).

He performed the first simultaneous Pancreas Kidney Transplantation (SPK) in Sri Lanka in 2016, and the first enbloc dual kidney transplantation in Sri Lanka in 2016. He also performed the first limb transplantation in 2017 in Sri Lanka. The first Limb transplantation was lower limb transplantation. This was only the fifth in the world at that time.  He also performed the first liver transplantation at the Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura in 2019.

The CAPD team of Anuradhapura received an International Award, “Excellence in patient care awards 2020, Awarded by the Royal College of Physicians, England.

He joined the faculty of medicine as a senior lecturer in 2021.

Dr Joel Arudchelvam has also published many articles in both local and international journals.

He was awarded with the Sri Lankan national honours “Vidya Nidhi” in 2019.
