2013 Law and Society Trust: Citizens’ Commission Project: April 2009 –To December 2013. Initiated, designed and managed the implementation of the Citizens’ Commission on the Expulsion of Muslims from the Northern Province by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in October 1990– a community based documentation project on the LTTE’s act of ethnic cleansing of the Muslim minority from the northern Province of Sri Lanka. The project was conceptualized as a truth seeking documentation exercise within the larger rubric of transitional justice initiatives. Nine commissioners, with an advisory group of activists and three partner organizations together with the Law and Society Trust brought out a comprehensive report outlining the history of the expulsion, two decades of displacement and the expectations and experiences of return. The report also contained extensive recommendations. Entitled The Quest For Redemption : The Story of the Northern Muslims, the report was released in November 2011. I conceptualized the initiative, oversaw coordination of the commission activities, managed the research staff and edited the report. See www.citizens-commission.org.
Translation of the report to Sinhala and English and the dissemination of findings were conducted in 2012 and 2013.
