Prof. Sumudu Nimali Seneviratne graduated with first-class degree honours from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 2004 (MFC 97/98 batch). She joined the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Colombo as a Lecturer in 2010. She obtained Board certification as a Paediatric Endocrinologist in 2015, and a doctoral degree(PhD) on the “Effects of antenatal exercise in overweight and obese women on maternal and offspring outcomes” at the Liggins Institute, University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2015. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2015, and Professor in Paediatric Endocrinology in 2023.
She has many research publications in high impact journals, with an H-index of 13, and received several grants and awards for research excellence from local and international agencies. She played a key role in initiating the Postgraduate Research Communication Day (Bus stop talks) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo and initiated establishment of the Postgraduate Student Society at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo in 2023. Her research interests include Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia(CAH), Differences of Sexual Development (DSD), Growth hormone therapy, developmental origins of health and disease (DoHAD), childhood obesity and endocrine complications in paediatric cancer survivors. She actively collaborates with several international research networks including the I-DSD/ I-CAH/ I-Turner Registries and GloBE-Reg.
She was instrumental in establishing the Clinical Research Centre for Complex Hormonal Disorders at the Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo in 2022, and is the Director of the Centre. She is keenly interested in improving the care for children/ adolescents and youth with diabetes and endocrine diseases. She is a member of several international and local non-profit organizations including @MATES4Kids (Maximizing Access To Essential Supplies for Children), GPED (Global Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes), NCD Alliance Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Diabetes Association.
She has also been involved in community efforts to curb childhood obesity in Sri Lanka, through the Sri Lanka College of Endocrinologists, being the lead coordinator of the school health component of the Sri Lanka Diabetes and Cardiovascular Initiative (SLDCi), A World Diabetes Foundation funded Multi-partner collaboration 2017-2020, via the “Chandi-Bandi “project, which is anticipated to be implemented in nationwide with collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
