Prof. Mohamed Shiffa, present Head of the Unani Section, Institute of Indigenous Medicine (IIM), University of Colombo, Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka is a Unani physician, academic, ilaj bit tadbir specialist and rheumatology specialist.
He has started the medical carrier by Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery (BUMS) offered by the IIM, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Then he has successfully completed the postgraduation ‘Doctor of Medicine (MD)’ in Unani Moalejat from the renowned university, Jamia Hamdard. He has also graduated in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree program at Open University of Sri Lanka. Consequently, passed the law examination in the Sri Lanka Law College, and enrolled as an Attorney-at-Law in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Further, he is reading for PhD in Unani Moalejat in Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India.
He was appointed to various academic and administrative positions in the University of Colombo. He has worked in different levels such as temporary demonstrator, probationary lecturer, lecturer, senior lecturer, professor as academic positions. Therefore, teaching & practical training have been given to under graduates and post graduates students by him. Also, he has served as Head of the Department of Ilmul Jarahat (Surgery), student counselor, coordinator for many programmes and presently Head of the Unani Section, as administrative position in Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo. He has worked as a clinician in the Borella Ayurveda Teaching Hospital and acted as a clinical coordinator as well.
Further he has made many contributions to develop the academic activities in IIM as he has worked as a course coordinator for MD and developed the Certificate Course on Hijama (Cupping) and Irsal e Alaq (Leech Therapy) for medical graduates. He has organized many conferences and workshops at national and international level.
Awards such as SEDA award, ICCR award, UGC research grant award, Ibnu Sina International Award by All India Unani Tibbi Congress, Global Award – 2019 by Hakim Ahmed Ashraf Memorial Society are awarded to him. He has participated as a resource person in many national international conferences, workshops and training programs.
He has published more than 90 research papers in peer reviewed, indexed journals, National and International conferences and 4 books in the field of Unani Medicine and two more books are on the pipeline. He has created three software and one android mobile application related to Unani Medicine. Further he served as a reviewer in the national and international journals.
He is a life member of World Unani Foundation, Population Association of Sri Lanka, All India Tibbi Congress and SLAS. He served as a member in many national and international committees including statutory bodies as well.
