Dr. RDH Kulatunga is a professor in Ayurveda, attached to the Department of Kayachikitsa & Deshiyachikitsa at the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo.
She earned her Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Degree with 1st class Honors in 1991 from the University of Colombo. Following her graduation, she served as a Government Ayurveda Medical Officer in the Department of Ayurveda under the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine for one year.
In 1993, Dr. Kulatunga joined the Institute of Indigenous Medicine as a probationary lecturer in the Department of Shareera Vijnana, actively engaging in academic pursuits. She furthered her education through a scholarship under the Indo-Sri Lanka Cultural Scholarship Scheme in 1995, following M.D studies in Kayachikitsa at the Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. She successfully completed her M.D (Ay.) in Kayachikitsa in 1998, specializing in Vikriti Vigyan.
Returning to the Institute, Dr. Kulatunga resumed her duties in December 1998, earning promotions to the position of Senior Lecturer Gr.11. She later moved to the Department of Nidana Chikitsa at the Institute of Indigenous Medicine, where she continued to contribute to academic activities, including teaching, examinations, clinical works, and consultation services at the Ayurveda Teaching Hospital in Borella.
Dr. Kulatunga has actively participated in workshops, seminars, and training programs at the National Institute for Traditional Medicine, Nawinna, as a resource person. Additionally, she provided services for various examinations at the Department of Ayurveda and Ayurveda Medical Council.
In 2006, she successfully completed the Diploma program on Drug Abuse Management Studies with merit pass at the Institute of Human Resource Development, University of Colombo. Subsequently, she was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship in 2008 for her Ph.D. studies. Dr. Kulatunga completed her Ph.D. in Kayachikitsa at the Institute for Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar, India.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kulatunga has actively participated in review panels, workshops, and seminars both nationally and internationally. She has also served in administrative roles at the Institute of Indigenous Medicine, contributing to undergraduate & post graduate studies, curricular revision, the Ethics Review Committee, and engaging in multi-disciplinary research activities.
In recognition of her contributions, Dr. Kulatunga was promoted to the position of professor in Ayurveda at the Department of Ayurveda, IIM, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, effective from December 11, 2019. Currently, she is serving as the Head of the Department of Kayachikitsa & Deshiyachikitsa at the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo.
