Professor Chathuranga Ranasinghe is a Professor in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the Department of Allied Health Sciences, and the Director of the Center for Sport and Exercise Medicine , Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo Sri Lanka.
He obtained MBBS in 2007 from Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo, the Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (CTHE) accredited by Staff and Education Development Association (SEDA) UK in 2011 and Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Medicine from Post Graduate Institute of Medicine in 2015. He obtained his PhD in 2018 in the area of Sports Medicine and Clinical Exercise Physiology from School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia. He has clinical training in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET), exercise prescription, strength,conditioning and rehabilitation at QUT Health Clinics, Australia and University of Durham UK for sports personnel, patients and elderly.
Chathuranga was the Chief Medical Officer of the Sri Lankan team for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou, China 2022. He was awarded the 7th Sheikh Fahad Hiroshima-Asia Sports Medicine and Science Award in line with the Asian Games 2022, by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) given once in 4 years to a scientist/doctor in recognition of the scientific/ medical contribution to sports and achievements in the Asian region.This award was given first time to a South Asian. He was listed among the top 100 Asian Scientists for the year 2023 by the renowned science and technology magazine, Asian Scientist which showcases the accomplishments of the most outstanding researchers in Asia.
He is an expert committee member to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Guideline Development Committee member to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Physical Activity 2020. He is a member of the medical committee National Olympic Committee Sri Lanka and the current editor of the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association. He is the chairperson of the forum for Sports and Exercise and the former convener of the expert committee on Non Communicable Diseases at Sri Lanka Medical Association. He was the Chairperson of the Asian Universities Alliance Youth Forum 2019.
His research interests are Sports medicine, podiatry, exercise and Non-communicable diseases.
